Chapter Six

Jake woke from a fitful sleep on the small cot. What the hell was he thinking? Images of his career going down the tubes flashed before him. In six years, he’d never done anything worthy of an Article 15. One look at Candidate Little and everything went out the window. The rules failed to apply. In fact they’d run and jumped of the nearest cliff. He’d be foolish to just think it was sex. Their connection was much stronger, as if they’d known each other from another lifetime.

Every time they formed up, he couldn’t take his eyes off her. It was his yearning to be near her that got them in their predicament. Had he not been jealous of the candidate experiencing the softness of her skin, he’d never intervened. The male candidate losing the bouts with her was merely his excuse. What he didn’t anticipate was his reaction to her.

Thankfully, it was Saturday. The other cadres were off enjoying their weekend, and after an hour of PT, he would be as well. The student leaders would be in charge for the day with strict instructions on having the barracks inspection ready.

Candidate Little cast him a smile as she made her way to the formation area. He returned a wink though his heart yearned for more. If the Army wanted him to smile while training, they’d have issued it to him. Seeing her long legs again forced images of her legs wrapped around him to the forefront.

Shit! “Fall in!” he commanded. “We’re going to the stadium and doing up and overs. Student leader, take charge.”

He turned the platoon over and fell back as they took off for the short jog to the old stadium. Forty minutes later, he’d run them to the ground and got his mind back on track. He needed to get off post and quick.

After rattling off a list of items to the student leadership, he hopped on his motorcycle and put as much distance between him and Bravo Company as he could. After a quick shower, he rode out and met up with a few of his other military biker buddies at a bar on the strip, Staff Sergeant Henderson among them.

“I tell you what, those female candidates are looking better and better with each class.” He took a swig of beer with his ring-banded hand.

“Your wife would kill you for saying that.” Jake popped a fry in his mouth and checked the TV monitors for the score of the baseball game.

“Which is exactly why I don’t let her ride with me.” He let out a burly laugh. “Seriously that Little. Whoo wee! I haven’t seen one like her in a long time. That’s Air Force.”

Jake laughed. It was a running joke that the Air Force got all the pretty women. “She’s tough too.”

“Mm hm. Half the males are scared to get beat by her on the PT test. They seem to get extra stamina when she tries to pass them. If nothing else, she’s good for making them step up a notch.
